Love's still in the air...

Hi there, guys!

Based on our Valentine's Day post, Nick Favaretto suggested we made a list with our top ten love songs. What an amazing idea! Though, I must admit, such a daring task to accomplish. My list had twice as that and ideas were still coming up! Had to cut loads of "important" ones, needless to say. Anyway, here they are:

1. Carmen: Habanera - Bizet
   (Do watch the video!)
2. O que será (À Flor da Pele) - Chico Buarque
3. Dueto - Chico Buarque
4. Black - Pearl Jam
5. A Letter to Elise - The Cure
6. Ainda Lembro - Marisa Monte & Ed Motta
7. I Remember You - Skid Row
8. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns n' Roses
9. Jealous Guy - John Lennon
10. Pétala - Djavan

Nick, thank u so much for the suggestion. Would u please be a dear and repost your list in the comments below?

Guess we may end up being surprised by the coincidences in our choices. Or - who knows? - enlarging our list of favourite ones!

Time to contribute!!!

P.S.: Can't avoid but quoting Djavan.

Por ser exato, o amor não cabe em si.
Por ser encantado, o amor revela-se.
Por ser amor, invade e fim.

It's Valentine's Time!

We know that love is in the air during this period of the year due to Valentine's Day. Maybe that's why I feel like talking about it today. : )

How many expressions related to love do you know?
Take a look at some of them:

Love at first sight - used when you immediatelly fall in love with sb.
To fall in love - to be in love with sb. No way out. ;-)
To see, to date, to go steady - This is very nice 'cause it shows us exactly what stage the relationship's in. First, you start seeing sb, but it's nothing serious at all. Then, you start dating, that is, things are getting more serious. Finally, you go steady. This means your relationship is now official. (What a process!)
To light up sb's life - to make sb feel well and smile. You can say: Honey, you light up my life!
To drive sb crazy - It means you do want / love sb. Loads of passion involved!
Your better half - it refers to your beloved one.
Perfect match / Soul mate - the person who completes and fulfils you.
You're too good to be true - It means the person is so incredible you can't believe, it's like a dream come true (this can also be used).

To close, I'll share with you a song which has been recorded by many people in love. This version was taken from the film Ten Things I Hate about You. Click here and enjoy!

The Lion

This poem is a contribution from Sônia Sabino. Though it seems so simple, it's deep in content and analysis. We'd like to share it with you.

The Lion
The lion
King of the cats
A magnificent beast
Meant to be roaming free
Climbing trees
Not locked up in a cage
Forced to pace back and forth
Back and forth
People throwing things at it
This is not how the king of the cats should be
And yet he is
He's in a cage

Another lion
A female
Is brought to stay with him
He is happy and proud
But they shrink the cage
Giving two lions less space than before
It's just not fair

Kristina Landen

Besides the beauty of its words, this poem invites us to reflect upon the current situation of some most of the wild animals in our planet. Many are exhibited in zoos - some of them may even be tasted at the zoo's restaurant (see info here )! Other species are hunted or even clubbed to death for fur, like those cute baby seals in Canada.

The matter is: do we, human beings, have any RIGHT towards animals at all? To what extent? What about DUTIES?

Should we extend this discussion to our pets? Raise your hands if you've got pets! \o/ \o/ \o/ (2 kittens, BTW).

Looking forward to your contributions.

New Year's Resolutions

Whenever a year is over and another one begins, it's always the same thing: more and more resolutions. In the end, some of them end up not being fulfilled. Even so, these resolutions are essential for us to set new personal goals and feel like we're having a fresh start. That's the reason why I have decided to share mine with you, so that I can encourage you to make your own. Here they are:

- Offering my students this blog (which is also for anyone interested in learning and developing their English).
- Preparing even better classes.
- Reading more.
- Going on a diet! I need to lose at least four kilos to start with.
- Going back to my yoga classes.
- Meditating more frequently (everyday, if possible).
- Starting to exercise (this is one of those I believe won't be fulfilled!)

What about your resolutions? Would you like to share any of them with us? Even if you don't feel comfortable enough with your English, give it a try. You might be surprised!

Waiting for your contributions,
Sabrina Braga
