1- "brung" is kind of bad grammar. It's a mistake.
2- Nelson doesn't know he had made a grammar mistake. As the word "grammar" sounds like "grandma" the boy understands his grandfather is talking about Nelson's grandmother...never about his grammar mistake!

That's it, everyone! The correct form is BROUGHT, as Leo has pointed out. And the mistake was the beginning of a huge misunderstanding!!! Regina's explanation is just perfect; take a look at her comment.
